Kevin Feige Reveals That Happy Hogan Could Have Died In The MCU Story

Happy Hogan, Jon Favreau’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, became a valuable figure for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, but things almost went quite differently. Happy almost died during the incidents of Iron Man 3, according to Marvel CEO Kevin Feige.

For anyone who doesn’t remember, in Iron Man 3, Happy was seriously wounded by one of Aldrich Killian’s (Guy Pearce) thugs in a blast outside the TCL Chinese Theatre. He was still able to heal completely, however, the original screenplay said that he was intended to die. Feige and Favreau discussed what almost occurred and why Happy’s fate was changed in a discussion.

“There was a little difference in the script than the final movie, which was that Happy died,” Feige said. “Jon had a note — that is one of the most important notes he gave us at Marvel — which was, ‘What if Happy was severely injured but did not die?’”

“He’s not lying! It’s true, it’s true,” Favreau added. “They accommodated it, and I’m so happy I’ve been a part of this and being able to be there with Tom Holland since the beginning. He’s such a pleasure to work with, and Spider-Man director Jon Watts, who is incredibly talented, it’s just fun to continue this relationship with Marvel Studios. It is a big part of my life, and these people are friends and also people I work with.”

Favreau is a founding member of the MCU, having helmed the first Iron Man film, which formally launched the MCU into the insane, dominant force that it is today. Who knows what might have happened if Iron Man hadn’t been as wonderful as it was?

“I’ve said this many times, the MCU would not be what it is without Mr. Favreau at all,” Feige continues. “Obviously Iron Man, obviously everything there, but staying the heart and soul of Happy Hogan is what’s really amazing.”. “Since like 2006… it’s been a wonderful collaboration and friendship,” said Favreau. “It’s so great to be part of the Spider-Man trilogy now, as well as the Avengers movies.”

Happy has now featured in all 3 Spider-Man films, as well as a brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame, after his presence in Iron Man 3. He usually has a humorous cameo appearance, but it’s always amusing to see him pop up in any MCU film.
