John Leguizamo Calls Out Chris Pratt’s Super Mario Bros. Movie As “Unfortunate”

#1. He Thinks The Super Mario Bros. Movie Cast Lacks Diversity

Super Mario is an iconic game title produced by Japanese game company Nintendo. It was first released in 1985 and has achieved incredible success ever since. The impact of this game and the characters are undeniable. Notably, Mario and his brother, Luigi are introduced as Italian plumbers. 
John Leguizamo portrayed Luigi in the 1993 movie and acted opposite Bob Hoskins as Mario. In an interview with IndieWire, the 62-year-old actor stated that he felt the casting was “unfortunate”, “For them to go backwards and not cast another kind (actor of color) of sucks”. He implied that the cast lacked diversity.During his days, the directors of the film had to fight really hard to cast him as Luigi. “The directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought really hard for me to be the lead because I was a Latin man, and (the studio) didn't want me to be the lead. They fought really hard, and it was such a breakthrough”. 
John Leguizamo himself had to deal with colorism in Hollywood, therefore, he might think it is essential to speak his mind. Previously, the Seen actor shared that he was once fired for being Latino. The story is rather heartbreaking. Since another Latino actress got cast, he was fired since there could not be two Latin people in one movie. Recently, Black Panther 2 star Tenoch Huerta also defined this situation, not in Hollywood but in his own country, Mexico. 

#2. Who Will Star In The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2022?

The 2023-released movie features Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi, respectively. The voice cast also includes other actors such as Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen. These talented actors will take us to the Mushroom Kingdom in the upcoming movie from Universal Studios and Illumination Studio. Chris Pratt is now among one of the most desired actors in Hollywood with a large number of recent and upcoming projects. On November 25, 2022, The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special featuring the 43-year-old actor will be on air on Disney+.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie release date is officially April 7, 2023. Last month, the official trailer reveals its characters and potential storyline. We will once again meet with our favorite game characters consisting of Mario, Toad, Princess Peach, Luigi and the antagonist, Bowser. The trailer also gives us a closer look at the Super Mario world with the Mushroom Kingdom and so many more.
