Paul Bettany Uncle Frank Review: The Comedy Drama Movie Is Not Every Comedic

Paul Bettany Uncle Frank is a Prime Video’s feature film that premiered in 2020. Even though the movie is categorized as a comedy drama movie, it lacks certain comedy elements. However, is it worth-watching?
Let’s get to know more in this post.

#1. Paul Bettany And The Cast’s Performances Are Great

Previously, we know him mostly from his role as Vision in Movies and TV series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His role in the 2021 Disney+ series WandaVision earned him a nomination at the  Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. His career is remarkable with several movies, TV series and theater plays also. In 2014, he also started directing films starting with his first self-produced film Shelter.
Significantly, the character he portrayed in this film is definitely different from the rest of his other characters. The English actor acted opposite Sophia Lillis, Peter Macdissi, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn and more in this Alan Ball’s queer-themed movie. And it can be said that we might hardly recognize him. The leading character, Frank Bledsoe, is an alcoholic, in-the-closet professor at the New York University. He has a haunting past with his first romantic partner and his homophobic dad. Therefore, he decided to flee to a big city, far away from his traumatic time.
Sophia Lillis portrayed Beth Bledsoe. She demonstrated exactly a niece and an ally. Peter Macdissi acted opposite the two main actors as Walid "Wally" Nadeem, Frank’s “roommate”. He also escaped his country in the Middle East because it is illegal and unacceptable to be homosexual there. They both gave decent performances and also did the rest of the cast.

#2. Despite All The Flaws, The Movie Is Worth-Streaming

Set in the 1970s when homosexuality was not well accepted, even when within family. The movie is packed with too many genres. It starts lightly as a comedy series, then turns into a coming-of-age with the main character’s flashback, then a road movie and a drama movie. And all of them happen in a LGBTQ-themed movie. There have been several reviews stating that the movie was a lot to handle, even though the plot is predictable. However, it does a great job at storytelling.

It is never easy to come out of the closet, especially when you are a teenage boy who lives in a religious family, in a small town, in the mid 20th century. It was not accepted or understood at all cost. In his family, his sister was the only one whom he could talk about this to. His niece comes second. His father found out he was making out with his friend and never forgave him until his death. Every trauma in his life happens for this sole reason. Especially when his partner was destroyed by his words, which he learned from his dad.
The movie gives a realistic and painful picture of homosexuality and homophobia in the middle of the last century. People from the community were treated as kinds of disease and flaws. They could not express their feelings or their true self even though they did not harm anyone. The movie is heartbreaking, touching and fortunately, the ending is satisfying. It is highly recommended to stream this movie.
