Even though the promotional material strongly suggests that this will be Pompeo's last season on Grey's Anatomy, that is not the case at all - at least not right now. Pompeo announced in August that she would be starring in and executive producing an untitled limited series for Hulu, owned by Disney. In light of the new opportunity, Pompeo has reduced the number of episodes in which she will appear on Grey's Anatomy during its currently airing 19th season. Her seventh appearance will be in the winter premiere, and she will likely appear in the season finale.

Despite this, Pompeo continues to serve as an executive producer on Grey's (and the spinoff show Station 19). She will also continue to provide the signature voiceover for Meredith in each episode. Additionally, there is no denying that the possibility of her returning to see the doctors at Grey Sloan still exists, even if the plot involving Boston falls apart. Also, here is the comprehensive review of Grey's Anatomy: Thunderstruck.

Shonda Rhimes, the creator and executive producer of Grey's Anatomy, has stated for many years that she envisions the program continuing for as long as Ellen Pompeo wants to be a part of it. Rhimes has also stated that there would be no Grey's Anatomy without Meredith Grey in the lead role. This notion has been tested this season as showrunner Krista Vernoff has introduced a new group of residents and revisited the original pilot for Grey's with several familiar storylines impacting the show's new cast.

Specifically, this notion has been tested because Krista Vernoff has brought in a new crop of residents. It's also interesting to note that this season's class of interns is comprised of more established actors, such as Harry Shum Jr. (Crazy Rich Asians, Glee), Adelaide Kane (This Is Us, Reign), Midori Francis (The Sex Lives of College Girls, Dash & Lily), Nico Terho (The Thing About Harry), and Alexis Floyd (Shondaland's own Inventing Anna). All of these actors have appeared in a number.

Netflix has been extremely successful with its adaptation of the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, owned by Disney and licensed to the streaming service. The television show significantly contributes to Disney's revenue and is broadcast in more than 200 countries and regions worldwide. Although ABC executives have made it clear that they hope the show will go for a significant number of additional seasons, it appears that this year will serve as the show's first true test to determine whether or not it can be successful without Pompeo.
